Music and Family
My family has never been too big into music. There's only a couple of us within the family what actually play an instrument. My uncle is the only one currently playing, he can play the guitar and banjo. I wouldn't say he had a lot of influence with me going into music cause I was never really around him. My older brother attempted trumpet in high school but that only lasted a few weeks. My grandmother played the flute while growing up, but put it away after high school. I actually played on her flute when I first started and is the reason I play flute today! Listing them out actually makes it feel like a lot more.
With this Blog, I actually wanted to interview my dad. For some background he grew up in the 1970s if that gives you an idea of where he was at for music. The reason why I picked him is because he has introduced me to so many artist and types of music. I can see at times where music has played a huge part of his life, even if he doesn't see it.
This is my family, my dad is the one in the hat!
Here's the interview :)
Me: Ready? What is your earliest memory of music?
Dad: When Nana (his mom) alarm clock set to the stereo and would not wake up.
Me: What kind of music was played on it?
Dad: 70's mostly, I don't really remember any songs though.
Me: Did you enjoy that?
Dad: Yes.
Me: Really? Okay! Who was your favorite band when you were younger?
Dad: Pink Floyd.
Me: What song?
Dad: That's hard to say. I just liked that variety of sound that was in the music, but if I had to pick it would definitely be "Turning away" by them.
Dad: Not really.
Me: What kind of music did they listen to?
Dad: Papa (his dad) listened to a lot of 50's music and nana (his mom) was more of a 70's person.
Me: Did your parents have anything todo with the type of music you listen to?
Dad: Not one bit. Papa was always listening to 50's on the 5.
Me: 50's on the 5?
Dad: Yeah, that's what it was always on in the car. He'd turn it to CM65 sometimes too, but they didn't really listen to mine. I kinda went out on my own with music.
Me: What ways did you listen to music?
Dad: I would lay in the bed and just listen. (He didn't understand the question)
Me: Well, how did you listen to it?
Dad: Oh, on my stereo because we didn't have earbuds back then. Our first earphones were off a wattman.
Me: Did you play any instruments?
Dad: No
Me: Do you wish you did?
Dad: Yes, the drums!
Me: Why?
Dad: I really like the base and the beat of it. It's something I always listen out for in songs.
Me: Do you think music impacted how you viewed life or grew up?
Dad: No, I never viewed music as something like that.
Me: Okay that's understandable. How about now? What's your favorite type of music?
Dad: Mainly just rock.
Me: Whys that?
Dad: Mainly because it can keep me up a night. (he works 3rd shift)
Me: Do you have a go to song right now?
Dad: Yes, right now its by Pearl Jam "Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town."
(I laughed so hard at the response because he made the most priceless face. He was so proud saying the title of the song.)
Me: Oh, well that's very... interesting. What's your least favorite type of music and why?
Dad: Country, cause I can't stand it. It makes me want to fall asleep.
Me: What do you think about my music?
Dad: Other than the country, I like it a lot. Yours is a lot like mine.
Me: Has your perspective in music changed since I began my journey? Like marching band and stuff.
Dad: Not really, but I do like how they incorporate music that I do know in to the shows.
Me: If you had a song as of right now, that could describe your life, what would it be?
Dad: I don't know. Well, I can't really remember the song. Oh! "Love is what I got" by Sublime.
Me: Ohhhhh, okay, well, one more question. What type of music would you like at your funeral?
Dad: Something happy.
Me: Well what type of song, anything specific?
Dad: Well that's a really odd question, but it would be "Just breathe" by Pearl Jam.
(He got clever with this one)
Me: Hahaha! Alrighty, thank you!
End of interview:
I noticed two things in this interview. One, that my dad is a man of few words when he's under pressure. And music does play a part in all of our lives. Music was a small aspect in my dad's life For him it really wasn't a journey, he attached memories to them. He could remember little things like my nana's alarm clock, or what station my papa alway listened too. I really enjoyed doing this, and I will actually look too do this with some of my other family members!
Hey Hayle!! Your dad seemed like he was a very talkative person (this is definitely all jokes). My favorite part of the interview is when he listened to music laying down was I did giggle at that. Also, it was fun to hear some of these bands, Sublime was on my #1 song for the 2024 replay list, haha! Also, I have trouble remembering folks in class and it was good to connect your name to a face, so nice to meet you...? Haha!
ReplyDeleteHi! Your dad seems fun to be around! Pink Floyd was one of the first bands I listened to and my first band shirt. Drums would be a fun instrument to learn. I agree with him country music. I've never been able to get into it. He seems to really like Pearl Jam lol.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog! Your dad seems very honest and like someone you could befriend at a bar (as in he just seems really chill). Also, your uncle being able to play the banjo is really cool, I used to want to learn how to so I thought that was interesting. I liked the music that your dad mentioned, and I hope your dad can learn the drums if he still wants to!
